ABOUT THE SONIC BODYSHOP

MARK BENCUYA BIOGRAPHY

Mark Bencuya was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. From birth, he showed an avid interest in all things musical. Mark began taking guitar lessons before switching to piano at age 7. Although he played trumpet for a few years, the piano became his main instrument. He continued to study with several teachers through the end of high school. It was also in high school that he began his stage experience with the rock band, Three Mile Smile. A popular draw at high school dances and fraternity parties around the Ann Arbor area, Three Mile Smile was a great training ground for learning to play music on stage.

Upon graduating from Huron High School in 1987, Mark left Ann Arbor to continue his education at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Completing his bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications and Music in 1991, Mark was offered a position at a local recording studio, Aesthetic Productions. It was here that he developed his skills as a staff music writer, recording engineer, and producer for local bands.

One of his most visible productions was with his own band, Fambooey. Featuring several musicians from the Indiana Conservatory of Music and a rotating cast of characters, Fambooey premiered at a local charity concert in 1994 and released their first album, “Fungus Amongus”, the following year. The album attracted a solid fan base through airplay on college radio. After their second album, “Succulent,” was released on the Vivi Records label in 1996, Fambooey quickly became one of the busiest bands in the area. Playing venues throughout the Midwest, they also made the first of two appearances at the SXSW music conference in Austin, Texas. The spring of 1997 marked the release of “Live At Club Mildew,” a powerful home recording produced and engineered by Mark that captured the essence of the band’s live sound. It was released to solid reviews, and Fambooey hit the road again, playing with a diverse selection of bands including Kid Rock, The Why Store, The Last Poets, and Johnny Socko. After extensive touring, the band mutually decided to pursue other avenues in the music business and put Fambooey on hiatus.

After moving briefly to Louisville, Kentucky, Mark relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in 1998. He continued working as an audio engineer, mastering and editing several projects for Raw Funk Records, including releases from Parliament/Funkadelic members Michael Hampton, Sheila Horne, and Frank Kash Waddy. He has also continued to play keyboards for several bands on stage and in the studio, including Kenny Howes and the Yeah, Lotsa Poppa, Superchick, Royal7, Ken Will Morton, and Telegram.

In 2003, Mark launched the Sonic Body Shop, an Atlanta-based company dedicated to audio restoration and mastering.
